How to Build a Bookish Autumn Wardrobe with Fall Accessories

Forget about the catwalks of London, Paris, and New York; it’s time for Bookish Fall Collections, and we have two new apparel lines dropping. This season, we’re dressing for bookstore browsing, coffee runs, pumpkin patches, and those very important dates with our TBR.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons as it practically comes with its own dress code. Cozy layers, warm colors, comfy sweatshirts, boots, hats, and an ever-so-slight obsession with leaves and pumpkins. Add a book to the picture and, quite frankly, we’re ready.

This year, we have our new Fall Apparel collection alongside our recently launched  OUABC Branded Apparel, which means there are plenty of ways to add a little bookish personality to your wardrobe.

Of course, the trick isn't to dress head-to-toe in book merch every single day (although we're certainly not going to stop you). The easiest way to create a bookish autumn wardrobe is to take the clothes you already love and add a few pieces that quietly, or sometimes not so quietly, announce that yes, books are very much part of your personality.

Three women model OUABC fall apparel, including the Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads tee, Reading Season sweatshirt, and Harvest Moon Reader Society tee.

Drum Roll: Meet the OUABC Fall Collection

First things first, we have to introduce our four new autumn arrivals. We have Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads, Harvest Moon Reader Society, Reading Season, and Haunted By My TBR.

Each has a completely different feel, which means whether your autumn aesthetic is pumpkin patch, cozy couch, eerie season, or a little bit of everything, there is something here for you.

Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads

If your perfect autumn afternoon involves falling leaves, a warm drink, and absolutely nowhere you need to be for the next few hours, this one feels rather appropriate. The purple Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads design is embroidered on a Comfort Colors tee and features embroidery across the chest and on the sleeve.

It is one of those wonderfully easy pieces that does most of the work for you. Pair it with your favorite jeans and sneakers while the weather is still warm, then throw on a cardigan or denim jacket once temperatures start dropping.

Finish the look with the Well-Read Corduroy Hat, grab a book, and suddenly you're looking suspiciously like the main character in an autumn reading montage. Which, obviously, is the goal.

Harvest Moon Reader Society

Now, this is for the readers who don't simply enjoy autumn. They join the society. The burnt-orange Harvest Moon Reader Society printed T-shirt is on Bella+Canvas’s signature soft material and brings all those lovely warm autumn colors into one very bookish outfit.

Pair it with jeans and boots for an easy everyday look, or add a jacket as the weather gets cooler. The orange color also works beautifully with browns, denim, black, and all those earthy shades we suddenly remember exist the minute September arrives. You could even add the Trail Rides Cowboy Hat if you're feeling particularly adventurous.

Official Harvest Moon Reader Society membership requirements? We imagine they include owning more books than you currently have shelf space for and regularly saying, "I'll just read one more chapter." We think most of us qualify.

Reading Season

Football has a season. Pumpkin spice has a season. So naturally, reading deserves one too. The Reading Season embroidered sweatshirt is a Gildan sweatshirt featuring embroidery across the chest and on the sleeve, and it might just become the unofficial uniform of autumn reading.

This is the one to reach for on cooler mornings, bookstore trips, coffee runs, weekend errands, or those days when your only real plan is to finish your current read.

Pair it with jeans and sneakers for an easy out-and-about outfit, or leggings and your coziest socks if you're staying home. And if reading season somehow extends into winter, spring, and summer, we won't tell anyone.

Haunted By My TBR

Some people are haunted by ghosts. Bookworms are haunted by books they bought six months ago and still haven't read. The Haunted By My TBR cropped hoodie is a Bella+Canvas piece and brings just the right amount of eerie-season energy to your autumn wardrobe.

The green hoodie features ghosts, books, and what's probably the most relatable reader confession in the entire collection. Because it is cropped, it pairs beautifully with high-waisted jeans or leggings. Add boots or chunky sneakers, choose one of our literary phone cases, and you have a casual fall outfit without dressing like you're heading to a Halloween party.

The best part? None of these pieces have to live in one particular outfit. Mix them with what is already in your closet and make them your own.

Start With a Few Bookish Basics

Not every outfit needs to scream “I would rather be reading” from across the room. Sometimes a simple bookish basic is exactly what you need.

Our OUABC Branded Apparel Collection includes a white OUABC T-shirt, black OUABC T-shirt, gray embroidered sweatshirt (I have a confession: I live in this sweatshirt; it's super cozy), and a pink OUABC Dad cap.

Both of our OUABC T-shirts are Bella+Canvas: the white tee features our logo in full color, while the black tee features a simplified Once Upon a Book Club logo. My favorite cozy sweatshirt is a Gildan; besides a full-color embroidered logo on the front, it features that iconic “Open Your Gift” embroidery near the cuff. The pink dad cap finishes the look with a classic, casual vibe and an adjustable strap at the back.

These pieces can quietly sit at the heart of a bookish capsule wardrobe. Wear the black tee with jeans and boots one day. Layer the white tee under a cardigan another day. Throw the gray sweatshirt over either when the temperature drops. And if your fall wardrobe occasionally contains a bright pink baseball cap, even better because autumn has enough brown already.

Let the Accessories Do Some of the Talking

You don't necessarily need another top to make an outfit feel more bookish. Sometimes the smallest details are the most fun. A hat, bracelet, necklace, tote bag, or phone case can take an otherwise everyday outfit and give it that little “a reader lives here” touch.

When it comes to hats, we have a fabulous selection! There's the Trail Rides cowboy hat, the Well-Read corduroy hat, and our pink OUABC dad cap.

If jewelry is more your thing, you could add the Wicked Charm Bracelet, Mirror World Cuff Bangle, Dragonfly Necklace, Pearl Earrings, or Book Page Necklace.

And then, of course, there is the OUABC Box Tote Bag. Because every autumn outfit needs somewhere to put the book you insisted you weren't going to bring.

Dress for Your Autumn Reading Plans

One of the easiest ways to build your wardrobe is to think about where you're actually going.

Bookstore Browsing: Go with the Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads tee, jeans, sneakers, and the corduroy hat. Add the tote because there is a very real possibility you will leave the bookstore with considerably more than you arrived with.

Pumpkin Patch or Fall Festival: This feels like a Harvest Moon Reader Society moment. Add jeans, boots, a jacket if it's chilly, and perhaps the cowboy hat. Then spend the afternoon choosing pumpkins and finding the best spot for an autumn photo.

Book Club Night: Reach for the Reading Season sweatshirt with jeans and your favorite bookish jewelry. Comfortable enough for a long evening of chatting about the book and, if your book club is anything like ours, approximately seventeen completely unrelated subjects.

A Very Important Date With Your TBR: Haunted By My TBR hoodie. Leggings. Cozy socks. Phone on silent. Snacks nearby. No further styling advice required.

Create a Bookish Autumn Wardrobe That Feels Like You

Don’t get caught up in the idea that the best bookish wardrobe needs the most literary pieces. It's the one that still feels like you. Maybe that's one statement tee or hoodie tucked into your favorite jeans. Maybe it's an embroidered sweatshirt you practically live in once the temperature drops. Perhaps you're more of a subtle necklace, tote bag, and bookish phone case kind of reader.

Or perhaps you took one look at the Harvest Moon Reader Society shirt and decided you've found your entire autumn personality. We understand.

Start with the pieces you know you'll wear, mix them with clothes already hanging in your closet, and add accessories when you want a little extra bookishness.

After all, Paris and New York can keep their runways. This autumn, we're dressing for bookstore aisles, falling leaves, ridiculously long TBRs, and just one more chapter.
