How to Make Fall Your Coziest Reading Season Ever

Cozy fall reading setup with an open book, steaming mug, warm blanket, cinnamon sticks, and soft lights.

Have you ever had that feeling where staying home with a book stops feeling like you’re missing out and starts feeling like the best possible plan? I think fall lends itself perfectly to that whole wonderful feeling.

Maybe it’s because the leaves are changing colors, the evenings are getting cooler, blankets are becoming a thing, and then there are those warm glasses of cider that just ooze fall.  And the idea of spending an afternoon, evening, or entire weekend with a book suddenly seems completely reasonable. Honestly, we think fall may have been invented specifically for readers. Don’t worry, I’ll have excuses for winter for you as well!

Staying at home with a book is one of the best weekend plans I can think of; well, it’s right up there with hanging out with my book club, getting crafty, exploring cute new shops, and grabbing a great coffee and obligatory slice of cake!

And yes, a great book is technically all we need, but as you know here at Once Upon a Book Club, we’re all about details, and this season, we think a few cozy extras are just what we need. Besides, I can’t wait to wear our latest fall collection; it is so cute and cozy!

Step One: Change Into Something Ridiculously Comfortable

There is a very specific category of clothing that falls somewhere between “I am properly dressed” (in other words, completely comfortable) and “I could absolutely fall asleep on this couch.” That is exactly what we are aiming for.

Our Once Upon a Book Club Sweatshirt is an easy place to start when you want classic bookish comfort, while the Reading Season Sweatshirt feels particularly appropriate once the days start getting shorter. Because if ever there was a reading season, this is it.

And for those of you who are still enjoying warmer fall days, our Fall Leaves & Cozy Reads Tee gives you all the autumn energy without requiring full sweatshirt weather.

Add your comfiest leggings or pajama bottoms, grab some fluffy socks, and consider yourself dressed for the occasion.

Step Two: Build Yourself a Reading Nest

Yes, a reading nest. It definitely is a thing and an official fall requirement! A chair is simply somewhere you sit. A reading nest says you have absolutely no intention of getting up for the foreseeable future. Well, at least until that next “Open Your Gift” moment.

Start with your favorite reading spot and add a seriously cozy blanket. Our Faux Cashmere Plaid Blanket has exactly the kind of classic red-and-white plaid look that belongs beside a book on a fall afternoon. You could also curl up under our Bright Books Fleece Blanket if you prefer something a little more colorful.

Then come the pillows. The Little Women pillowcase adds the perfect bookish touch while giving you somewhere comfortable to sink into once “one more chapter” inevitably becomes five.

Finally, place a little table within reach. This is important, as snacks and drinks are always needed. Once you’re tucked under your blanket, we don’t want unnecessary movement!

Step Three: Pick a Book That Feels Like Fall

Now for the most important part. There isn’t one particular genre you have to read during fall. The trick is choosing a book that matches the kind of autumn mood you’re craving.

If You’re Craving...

Try This Fall Reading Mood

Small towns, changing leaves, and romance

Cozy fall romance

Magic and mysterious happenings

Witchy fiction or romantasy

Dark evenings and plenty of secrets

Mystery or thriller

Chilly nights and sweeping love stories

Historical romance

Complete escape from the real world

Fantasy

If you want a book that practically has fall written all over it, Falling Like Leaves by Misty Wilson is an obvious contender. We have a city girl stuck in a quaint Connecticut town, an old flame, and an annual fall festival complete with all those wonderfully autumnal small-town vibes.

If your ideal fall reading season involves a little more magic, To Drown a Witch by Lindsey Olsson brings enemies-to-lovers romantasy into the mix. The OUABC Lite experience includes five envelopes designed around the five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch, giving you an extra excuse to make an event out of reading it.

Step Four: Make Your Space Feel Like Fall

This step is all about creating just the right mood, and I can’t think of a better way than with a touch of candlelight. My other go-to is fairy lights; they always add a touch of magic. We need that perfect signal that it’s time to do something special. Yes, reading time has officially begun!

The Southern Gothic Apple Candle fits beautifully into a fall setup, especially if apple scents are part of your autumn happy place. Add softer lighting, switch off the glaring overhead lights, and suddenly your everyday living room feels much more like somewhere you should be reading until midnight.

Bonus points if it’s raining outside. Unfortunately, we can’t arrange that part for you.

Step Five: Something Warm in the Mug, Please

Now we’re getting serious. Fall reading requires a drink, and while your regular coffee absolutely counts, this is also the perfect excuse to make it feel a little more seasonal.

Try a maple cinnamon latte by adding a little maple syrup and cinnamon to your usual latte. Make a vanilla chai with chai tea, warm milk, and a splash of vanilla, or go all in with pumpkin hot chocolate. If you want something caffeine-free for an evening reading session, warm apple cider with cinnamon is hard to beat.

And yes, the mug matters. Pour your creation into our iconic “What the Actual Plot Twist” mug, set it on one of the Falling Like Leaves Coasters, and your fall reading setup looks very respectable indeed.

Step Six: Reading Snacks Are Absolutely Necessary

A good reading snack has two requirements: it should taste delicious, and ideally it shouldn’t require you to put your book down for long. Luckily, fall gives us plenty to work with.

Cinnamon sugar popcorn: Make a bowl of popcorn, drizzle over a little melted butter, then toss with cinnamon and sugar. Sweet, warm, crunchy, and easy to eat one-handed while you keep turning pages.

Caramel apple bites: Slice an apple into bite-sized pieces, drizzle with caramel sauce, and sprinkle with chopped pecans. Use toothpicks if you’d rather keep sticky fingers away from your book. We take book protection very seriously around here.

Freshly baked muffins (with a little help): This is the perfect time to keep a couple of muffin mixes in the pantry. Pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, blueberry, banana nut, or chocolate chip all work beautifully. Mix, bake, and twenty minutes later you have warm muffins and a kitchen that smells as though you’ve been baking all afternoon.

And if all of that sounds like entirely too much effort, we are absolutely in favor of grabbing donuts and Starbucks on the way home! After all, you have books to read. Priorities.

If you’re planning a whole evening around your book, head over to How to Build an Autumn Reading Night Spread with Candles and Kitchen Essentials for even more ideas.

Step Seven: Make Time for Reading

Here’s the part that can make your cozy fall reading season last longer than one particularly enthusiastic Saturday afternoon: actually make time for it.

Relax, you don’t have to block out an entire day or set those ambitious reading goals! Maybe Sunday afternoon becomes your regular reading time, or you swap half an hour of evening scrolling for a few chapters. I think I might make Friday nights all about pajamas, takeout, and whatever books I currently can’t put down.

It really boils down to a little consistency. It makes all the difference, and reading starts to feel like part of the season rather than something you’ll get around to when you have time. We love keeping a Reading Journal nearby to jot down thoughts as we go, or you could use our Bookmark Tracker Set to track your reading progress.

The important thing is to find something that works with your life. Ten minutes before bed counts. A chapter with your morning coffee counts. An entire rainy Sunday spent under a blanket most definitely counts.

Your Coziest Fall Reading Season Starts Here

So, what does the ultimate cozy fall reading season actually require?

A ridiculously comfortable outfit. A soft blanket. A book you’re excited to open. Something warm in your mug. Something delicious within reaching distance. Maybe a candle flickering nearby. And, most importantly, nowhere else you need to be.

Fall always seems to rush past ridiculously quickly, so claim a few of those chilly afternoons and darker evenings for yourself. Build the reading nest. Make the fancy drink. Light the candle. Open the book you’ve been saving because everything else can wait until the end of the chapter.

Cozy Fall Reading FAQs

How do I create a cozy fall reading atmosphere?

Creating a cozy fall reading atmosphere is all about the details. Add a soft, warm blanket and a comfy pillow to the mix. Banish those bright lights and bring in some soft lighting. Candlelight is always a winner. All that’s left is your favorite warm drink and obligatory snack! Now you’re set to grab your latest read and settle in.

What are the best books to read during fall?

Popular fall reading choices include cozy romance, mystery and thrillers, gothic fiction, fantasy, historical romance, and witchy reads. However, there are no rules about what makes a good fall book. Choose something that suits the atmosphere you want, whether that means a small-town romance filled with changing leaves or a dark mystery for a chilly evening.

What are some easy fall drinks to have while reading?

Maple cinnamon lattes, vanilla chai, pumpkin hot chocolate, warm apple cider, tea, and regular coffee are all easy options for a cozy fall reading session. Adding cinnamon, maple syrup, vanilla, or pumpkin spice to a drink you already enjoy is also an easy way to give it a fall twist.

What are some easy snacks for a fall reading night?

Good reading snacks are easy to prepare and easy to eat while holding a book. Cinnamon sugar popcorn, caramel apple bites, muffins, nuts, pretzels, pumpkin bread, donuts, and chocolate all work well. Keeping things simple means you can spend less time preparing food and more time reading.

How can I make more time for reading during fall?

Try choosing a regular time that naturally fits into your week, such as Sunday afternoon, before bed, or with your morning coffee. Even ten or twenty minutes of consistent reading counts. You don’t need an ambitious reading goal to make books a regular part of your fall.
