About the Book

Told from alternating perspectives, this novel follows two women, one Black and one white, whose friendship is indelibly altered by a tragic event.

From their earliest days in kindergarten, Jen and Riley's friendship has flourished into a bond as strong as that between sisters, despite the different paths their lives have taken. Jen settled into marriage at a young age and, after much anticipation, joyfully anticipates the arrival of her first child. Riley, on the other hand, has tirelessly chased her dream of becoming a television journalist, now on the brink of breaking barriers as one of the first Black female anchors on Philadelphia's leading news channel.

This unshakeable connection faces its most formidable challenge yet when a critical incident involves Jen's husband, a city police officer, in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. With Jen six months into her pregnancy, her world spirals as the stability of her future, her husband's liberty, and the solidity of her friendship with Riley come under jeopardy. Tasked with reporting on this pivotal event, Riley confronts the repercussions of the tragedy on her community, her career aspirations, and her lifelong bond with Jen.

We Are Not Like Them emerges as a compelling narrative that ignites discussions and honors the resilient nature of friendship.
