What is Once Upon a Book Club?

Once Upon a Book Club is a unique, interactive online community that offers a monthly subscription service where readers will receive a monthly box in the mail containing a newly released book to read for the month, along with 3-5 individually wrapped gifts.  The gifts will have page numbers attached to them and are strategically designed around something that is mentioned in the book.   Readers are not meant to open the gift until they have reached that particular page.

We are a unique, interactive reading experience that allows our readers to 'become' the character(s), holding items they are holding and bringing the book itself to life. Our monthly read-a-longs and discussion questions included with every box allow readers to interact with other subscribers and discuss the book/gifts. It's all the wonder of a book club without leaving your living room! 

I like the idea but I'm really picky about what I read. Can I request a certain book?

Each box and the items included involve months of careful planning, multiple rereads, and plenty of back-and-forth with our vendors to ensure everything is as close the the description from the book as possible. We do NOT offer more than one title per month per box and we do not accept custom requests. 

If you are a fast-reader or are worried you won't like our selection, check out our hint page for details on our next boxes selections!  This page is updated each month on the 15th, so you can always stay up to date on upcoming books!  If you're more curious and would like the exact title, send us an email at info@onceuponabookclub.com and we'll be happy to let you know the selected title up to one month before we ship.

Can I try a box without subscribing?

Definitely you can!  When you checkout, you'll be able to check a box labeled "This is a Gift".  Gift boxes are one-time, non-renewing orders so you'll only pay for the number of boxes requested at checkout.    You'll prepay for a set number of boxes and once the number of boxes you've selected has shipped, your order will expire and you will not be charged again or receive any additional boxes unless you place another order.

If you sign up for a gift order and love it, email us at info@onceuponabookclub.com and we'll be happy to change this to a regular renewing subscription for you!

How much does it cost?

The Adult and Young Adult versions of our Once Upon a Book Club box are $34.99 USD each per month, plus shipping.

How much is shipping?

US shipping is $9.50 USD per month, Canada shipping is $17.00 USD per month, and the rest of the world is $26.50 USD per month.

When do you ship your boxes?

Boxes are always shipped between the 17th-20th of the month.  We ship in batches so it's entirely random which day your box will depart and be on its way to you!  If it's the 20th and you have not received a shipping notice from us, please reach out at info@onceuponabookclub.com and we'll be happy to locate your box for you!

I live outside the USA. Do you ship to me?

We are proud to ship Once Upon a Book Club to anywhere in the world!  Our international packages should arrive within 10-14 business days of tracking updating, however international shipping can, in some unique cases, take up to 8 weeks to arrive.   Please note that custom fees may apply upon arrival in your country.  Please also note if something does happen to your package in transit, we cannot reship a replacement box at our expense.  In the event of this happening, we can offer a refund of the box, not including shipping costs, or you may pay to have it re-shipped at your own expense.  If you do not receive a tracking number, please email us - all our packages are tracked and we'll be happy to locate the number for you.

What company do you use to ship boxes? How long will it take my box to arrive?

All our boxes are shipped through the USPS worldwide! All US packages should arrive within 2-3 days of tracking updating.  Our international packages should arrive within 10-14 business days of tracking updating, however international shipping can take up to 8 weeks to arrive in some unique cases.   If you do not receive a tracking number, please email us - all our packages are tracked and we'll be happy to locate the number for you.

Can I send your box as a gift?  Will the gift recipient be notified?

Our boxes make fantastic gifts - thank you so much for thinking of us!  You can check off the "This is a Gift" box on the checkout page, which will allow you to order a pre-paid, set number of boxes.  After these boxes have shipped, your order will expire out of the system and you will not be charged again!  This is also great if you just want to try a box without subscribing, so 'gift' one to yourself!

Our gift boxes do ask for a gift recipient field be filled out, though you can enter your own email address if you'd like the order to be a surprise!  If you enter your recipient's email address they will be notified about the box so please be aware of that!  To avoid this, just enter your own email address in the gift recipient email field.

When do you ship Gift/One-Time boxes?

Gift (or one-time boxes) are shipped monthly between the 17th-20th. These boxes contain the same contents as our regular monthly subscription boxes, and ship alongside our regular subscription boxes as well.

These boxes are shipped through the same methods as our regular subscription boxes and take approximately the same duration of time. If your box has not been delivered in the regular amount of time, please do not hesitate to send us an email.

What's the difference between a gift box and a past box?

Gift boxes contain the same contents as our regular monthly subscription boxes, and ship alongside our regular subscription boxes as well.  They are shipped once per month, however gift boxes are non-renewing whereas a subscription is charged monthly.

Past boxes can be found in our shop.  These are boxes from past months that did not sell out and we have extras to sell for individual purchase.  They cost the same as our regular subscription, however there is no guarantee that we will have extras after we close orders so it's recommended you grab one through a gift/subscription purchase! Past boxes are shipped weekly, so it's recommended that you purchase a past box if you're looking to buy a gift for an upcoming event to ensure it arrives on in time.

When do you ship past boxes?

Past boxes are shipped on average, twice weekly. These boxes are shipped through the same methods as our regular subscription boxes and take approximately the same duration of time. If your box has not been delivered in the regular amount of time, please do not hesitate to send us an email.

What kind of items do you include in your boxes?

Our boxes have included an array of useful and significant items in the past.  Each box includes 3-5 gifts which can vary between useful and story-significant!  Story-significant pieces mean that it's a piece that may not have any monetary value but add to the reader experience we try to convey to our readers.  These items have included replica letters, recipes, identification cards, historical photographs and more!  Our useful items have included, but are not limited to purses, wallets, candles, kitchen items, household goods, picture frames, jewelry, bath and beauty products, accessories, toys, small snacks and more!

Many of our items are custom designed by the Once Upon a Book Club team so that they can enhance the reading experience to the best of their ability and are exclusive to our boxes.

Please note we use a variety of wrapping materials and vendors for the included gifts.  Those with allergies such as latex, peanuts and others are advised to use caution when opening any packages from Once Upon a Book Club as disclaimers are not listed on each individual package.

I want to switch from adult to young adult (or vice versa) for a month.  can I do that?

Absolutely!  We can switch your subscription for a month between the 15th - 14th of our ordering period as long as we are not sold out of the box.  Once orders close on the 14th, we cannot switch your subscription as we've already begun shipping and orders are locked in.  Any changes made on/after the 15th are for the next month's box.  

If you'd like to switch your subscription for one month, please email us at info@onceuponabookclub.com and we can help modify this for you.  If you'd like to permanently switch to the other variant, please let us know and we can help you with this too, however unless explicitly stated that you'd like to permanently switch, we'll assume you only want to switch for one month.

I want to skip a month, how do I do that?

Skips can only be processed on the customers end if they are subscribed to a monthly subscription. Subscriptions for 3, 6 or 12 months must email us at info@onceuponabookclub.com to have a skip processed.

Skips for monthly orders can be done by logging into your account and clicking the "Edit My Subscription" button! All skips must be processed before the 24th of the month. Any skips processed ON or AFTER the 24th will be a skip for the following month.

For example, if a box is skipped on May 22nd, the June box will be skipped. If a box is skipped on May 25th, the July box will be skipped, as the June box has already been paid for. If there are any concerns and the deadline was missed, please email us and we can manually push the funding to a future month.

Something was missing from/damaged in my box.  What can you do to fix this?

We are happy to replace any missing or damaged items within 30 days of shipping.  After the boxes have been shipped for 30 days we cannot guarantee we will have this item in stock and may not be able to replace it.  Please notify us at info@onceuponabookclub.com as soon as you become aware of a damaged/missing item.  For an easy way to check if an item is missing, refer to the pamphlet included in your box!  All page numbers of the included gifts will be listed there for reference.

I received the same book in another subscription box I get.  Can I get a refund for the duplicate book?

Unlike other subscription boxes, we make it easy to find out what titles are going to be in our boxes.  If you are at all concerned you'll be receiving a book you already own or one that you just received in another box, please email us and we'll be happy to let you know what book we're including so you can plan accordingly.  

Because we welcome our readers to find out the titles in advance, we do not offer refunds if a book is duplicated.  If you'd like the title to remain a secret but would still like to know if it's one you already own, just email us "Is your selected book this month "___________"?" and we'll be happy to simply give you a yes or no answer without disclosing the title.  All emails concerned book titles can be sent to info@onceuponabookclub.com

What are your Cancellation/Refund Policies?

New subscribers have until the 14th of each month to enroll in our next box. Once the order has been placed, charges are processed immediately.  Any changes to your order must be requested within 24 hours.  After 24 hours, all orders are locked in, however subscribers can cancel future charges at anytime!  Simply email us at info@onceuponabookclub.com prior to the 24th and we can process a cancellation for you and adjust any remaining funds as necessary.

All active subscribers will be charged on the 25th of each month. This includes all 1/3/6/12 month subscription boxes. Any cancellations on or after the 25th will not be refunded. They will receive all final boxes paid for prior to cancelling and then will no longer be subscribed.

If you would like to cancel your subscription please do so before the 25th of the month. From the 25th forward, supplies have been ordered for the next box and refunds will no longer be a possibility for that month. Once the card on file has been charged, any cancellations made after this time will NOT receive a refund; you will still receive one final box/the final boxes paid for, and will not be charged for further boxes.

I didn't like my box. Can I get a refund?

Boxes are unfortunately non-refundable and we don't accept returns. If an item is damaged or a package is lost, please reach out to us at info@onceuponabookclub.com and we will do everything we can to help resolve this.

How does the referral program work?

Our referral program benefits everyone!  In our Give $5, Get $5 program, for every friend you get to subscribe using your special link located on your account page, you'll earn $5 off your next box!  In addition, your friend will be able to receive $5 off their first box too!  Then they will receive their own code to share with their friends and so on!  Watch your book club grow and take advantage of the perks that come along with it!



Adult Box

What types of books will be sent?

Our Adult box typically includes one, newly released (within the past 3 months, unless otherwise stated) books of the following genres:

  • Women's Fiction
  • Contemporary Fiction
  • Historical Fiction
  • Mystery

We do occasionally branch out from these regular genres, but the stories we include  all have powerful messages and all books are read carefully before being selected for our boxes.

Who is this box appropriate for?

Our Adult boxes are typically appropriate for ages 18+. We never include excessive violence or erotic fiction, however many of our selections do contain adult themes, profanity, and content.  

Our boxes are curated by women as we are a women-run company, and the majority of our books include strong female characters.

When will this box ship?

Our boxes are always scheduled to begin shipping on the 17th and continue shipping through the 20th of the month. All boxes are shipping via USPS.  Please refer to our Shipping Estimates above for expected delivery times.

Can I find out the title of the book before ordering/receiving the box?

Absolutely! We don't announce the title publicly as many of our readers prefer it kept a secret, but please send us an email at info@onceuponabookclub.com if you'd like to know up to one month early!  Due to our privacy policy with the publishers we work with, we cannot disclose titles for boxes not yet for sale.



Young Adult Box

What types of books will be sent?

Our Young Adult box typically includes one, newly released (within the past 3 months, unless otherwise stated) books of any YA genre. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Fantasy
  • Contemporary
  • Historical Fiction
  • Sci-Fi
  • Mystery

We are frequently branching out and finding new and unique stories that have powerful messages woven among the pages! Any YA book is a contender for the YA box.

Who is this box appropriate for?

Our Young Adult boxes are typically appropriate for ages 14+. We never include excessive violence or erotic fiction, however many of our selections do contain young adult themes, including profanity, discussion of death, sex, alcohol, drugs, domestic issues, war, etc. We recommend any concerned parents to email us to ensure that the selection is appropriate for your child. Please email us at info@onceuponabookclub.com with any questions.  

In addition, our boxes are curated by women as we are a women-run company, and the majority of our books include strong female characters.
