About the book

Growing up in Spain, Puri was always aware that her deep love for chocolate was a gift passed down from her father. However, it wasn't until his passing that she discovers another legacy left behind for her—a cocoa plantation in Vinces, Ecuador, affectionately dubbed “París Chiquito.” With the ashes of World War I behind them, Puri, alongside her husband Cristóbal, embarks on a voyage across the Atlantic, hopeful for what the future holds in her newfound inheritance.

Their journey takes a tragic turn when an assassin targeting Puri mistakenly kills Cristóbal. In a daring move, Puri adopts her late husband's identity, donning his garments as a disguise to protect herself while she delves into the mysteries of her father's estate in Ecuador. This identity swap liberates her from societal expectations placed on women, yet Puri faces unforeseen trials—unearthing siblings she never knew, navigating concealed romances, and uncovering the bleak truths hidden by her father. Additionally, Puri finds herself drawn to a mysterious figure, even as she strives to uncover the adversary who continues to threaten her aspirations for a new beginning.

A captivating tale for admirers of Julia Alvarez and Silvia Moreno-Garcia, this riveting narrative whisks you away to the vibrant terrain of 1920s Ecuador. It masterfully intertwines familial intrigue, perilous enigmas, and the authentic historical backdrop of a town heralded as the “birthplace of cacao.”

I have given this as a gift twice. Both times when they opened it, it was not clear that the gifts were to be opened when they got to the page of the gift. Such a cool idea but has been a major disappointment twice.

Bought this as a present. I took a sneak peak at the gifts included and they are ok. Not some of my favorite gifts, but I think they will align with the book perfectly ( I have not read the book). FYI - Buy some hot chocolate mix and melting chocolates before starting the book. They will come in handy at one point in the book and you want to be prepared. I would have been disappointed if I didn’t have those items when I needed them.

You had me at chocolate

It's not much of a spoiler when it says it on the back of the book, is it?

How butch does a woman have to be to pass for a man? Every time I read a story about someone changing their appearance to the opposite gender, I'm like: How do they fool people? I know if I dressed like a dude, I'd be discovered immediately. This story was just bonkers! But in the best way possible. I was hooked from the beginning and I kept thinking about stories i have read about real life women that dressed like men for so many reasons. But I was invested in the story and there were a couple gifts that I really liked.

The gifts truly bring the story to life and perfectly match what’s happening in the story. For example-the main character might have gotten a bracelet from her best friend in the story. And then you get that bracelet as a gift! It’s so fun because it’s an immersive experience.
